Small things, but very helpful!

Sometimes you might find sentences and small grammar that is pretty tricky.

Here our first example:

A says: I do not understand why you all dislike milk.
B says: I do not understand why that you all dislike milk.

So, which one is correct?

They are both correct.
In fact, both sentences have the same meaning. It is just our speaking and thinking habit.

A's thinking was
I do not understand - why you all dislike milk.

B's thinking was
I do not understand why - that you all dislike milk.

If why belongs to the first half, "that" must follow for the second half.

Note:
"that" before "why"

I do not understand (that) why you all dislike milk.
It is not incorrect, we just don't say it, because "that" omits "why you all dislike milk.".

If we choose to say the whole sentence we just cancel "that" before why.
I do not understand that why you all dislike milk.

(that = why you all dislike milk)

Simple conversation:

A: We all dislike milk.
B: I don't understand that.

PostSubject: In school vs. At school   Tue Sep 22, 2009 11:36 am

"in school" or "at school"?

Both have different meanings.

I am in high school. - You are a student and study in high school.
I am at the high school. - Just a place where you are regardless if you are a student of that high school or not.

A: Do you go to work?
B: No, I don't. I am in high school.
(You are a student.)

A: Can you come this afternoon?
B: Alright. Where shall we meet?
A: Let's meet at our high school.

Examples - in:
I have to study a lot in my high school.
We didn't get much homework in our high school.
My teachers were very nice in high school.
My favorite teacher in junior high school was Miss Apple.

Examples - at:
I forgot my books at school.
We have a fountain at school.
I met my friends at school.

Note:
"in/at" rules applies to hospital, too.

He is in hospital. (He is sick and is a patient.)
She's works as a nurse in a hospital. (occupation, job)

Bill is visiting his cousin at Far Eastern Hospital. (He's a visitor.)
There is a taxi stand at the hospital.
